Social media has been ablaze about the recent announcement of DALL-E 3.
Many have been quick to claim that this will kill Midjourney, especially since it's being integrated straight into ChatGPT.
If we take a closer look at the DALL-E 3 marketing website, it's clear that Open AI is trying to carve out a unique value proposition for itself.
It focuses almost exclusively on prompt coherence rather than image quality.
And yes, from the looks of it, this seems to be one of the areas where Open AI has a massive competitive advantage.
So much so that many people are jumping to conclusions.
Since it's much easier for less skillful prompters to create something very specific in DALL-E 3 than it is in Midjourney, it's not surprising that they would perceive it as "better".
Midjourney has admitted that it's natural language processing layer is rather basic (yet still better than anything Stable Diffusion is capable of).
But the proponents of DALL-E 3 are ignoring the fact that Open AI and Midjourney are clearly targeting different market segments.
Image quality, creativity, and aesthetics are crucial for anyone working in a creative field and Midjourney still wins that competition.
DALL-E 3 will likely have a better change at capturing the mass market, but it's purpose is also different.
So let's stop comparing apple with oranges.
Life doesn't need to be a zero-sum game.
