2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY. What Jack Kirby delivers in this treasury edition is downright incredible, and a "must" for #OuterSpaceSaturday during #JackKirby_June. This is an adaptation of the Kubrick film but I feel it needs to be read on its own merit rather than a companion piece to the film because film is film and Kubrick is muthafukin Kubrick. The media are too uniquely different. And this comic is unique among comics. Check that splash page of monkeys discovering the monolith! The energy flowing off that page is palpable. I love that Kirby chose to recreate that scene with astronauts discovering the monolith. And then things get super psychedelic after Dave defeats Hal and encounters the monolith floating in space. Following that are several pages (pages!) of mindbending cosmic Kirby art. He uses a number of photo collages throughout the book but it's these pages, of Dave passing through the monolith, that I could just stare at. Following all that psychedelia Kirby then transitions to monochrome colors and a exploration of life after death. Damn! Right?! This book is Kirby exploring all the interests and questions that he seeds in all his other works and must for all Kirbynauts... Kirbynauts, I like that.
