This fight is a reference to the gorgeous Knuckles VS Mecha Sonic fight scene (in SMBDX episode 5) even if Mecha Sonic is a bit different in it. ( • Super Mario Bros. DX (Episode 5) . Probably the best fight scene we've seen so far since SMBZ.
SMBDX is a kind of a reboot of SMBZ with a complete scenario rewrite (largely inspired by original serie).
