Having released successful pop-singles like ‘Fireworks’, ‘Mala Leche’ and ‘Candy Crush’, it’s nearly impossible to imagine a Belgian radio-and-tv-landscape without her in it. Just last summer, the young singer from Kortrijk was nominated for Zomerhit 2022 and she is gradually becoming famous for her bubbly personality, her catchy songs and her DIY-approach. With her last single, ‘One Day’ she left a lot of big impressions. Axelle showed a fragile side of herself and proved to have an amazing voice.
With ‘Queen of Hearts’ Axelle is once again aiming for the hit lists. In her new single, Axelle is letting us know she’s not too fond of growing op. ‘Queen of Hearts’ is a poppy rocksong reminding us of easier times with little responsibilities, emotions all of us sometimes have to cope with. Oh how lovely it was being a child. “Growing up you learn a lot of hard truths. You realise that the world can sometimes be a harsh place and that eventually you’re on your own. I used to call myself an optimist, but I learned that I sometimes mistake naivety for optimism. I’m a firm believer that everything will be ok and that the world exists of princes on white horses and ponies with rainbow-coloured hair. But in 2022 my own ‘motto’ turned on me and the world proved me wrong. With ‘Queen of Hearts’ I’m urging my desire to escape all these awful truths for one last time. I want to go back to my carefree world and for one final time, go ‘down the rabbit hole’!”
The loss of her dad, which she sang about in ‘One Day’, can obviously still be felt on a surface level. But with ‘Queen of Hearts’ Axelle is once again singing positive notes. She’s able to give in to the music and truly connect to the song. Next to the obvious lyrical references to childhood, the music is very much leaning towards Axelle’s own youth, the nillies rock-era. Smart! Ironically, Axelle is singing about how she doesn’t like growing up, yet we hear an undeniable growth both musically and from a songwriting perspective. Axelle is off to a great start in 2023 with an upbeat pop rock song that makes us all want to sing along and disappear to Wonderland!
