This video demonstrates a playthrough from a new File to unlock the four hidden characters (Bowser Jr, Boo, Shadow Mario, and Petey Piranha) in under 90 minutes - WITHOUT SAVING. Each character requires the completion of certain modes of the game. Here they are as follows (in order):
1) Completing the 18 Hole Birdie Challenge unlocks Bowser Jr.
I chose Diddy since he is a quick pick that is easy to control. In order to unlock 18-hole, one must complete the Front 9 and Back 9 portions separately. If you fail to obtain a Birdie on a hole, you must start the challenge over. That is very time-consuming, so I decided to get this part done first. Unlocking Bowser Jr. is helpful for the Tournaments, as well.
Nabbing some Aces saved some useful time. I also had some close calls when a Pin Shot would go awry. After 12 minutes, I had Bowser Jr. unlocked.
2) Collecting 50 Best Badges unlocks Boo
I use Bowser Jr. for his power and decent stats. He is able to get stroke-saving Eagles that the non-Starred characters cannot easily obtain. It is crucial to nab every Birdie you can, even if it means taking a bit more time for Par 3s. Playing extra holes is time-consuming, especially since Shifting Sands #16 is hard to Birdie, and having to play the 18th hole means going through a 30-second ceremony.
3) Collecting all 36 Stars in 1-player Ring Attack unlocks Shadow Mario
I use Mario for his relative power and good shot trajectory. The low Control doesn't really hamper an un-Starred character. There are some hard holes that require a bit of luck with the lie on second/third shots, and I had some slight mistakes, so I had to restart a few Holes. I went pretty fast, especially with the repeatable Ace on the second hole.
4) Completing the other Side Games (not Birdie or 1 On 1 Putt) unlocks Petey Piranha
I use Diddy for these. Having Control is very important for the Shot Practices. Only the Trouble Shot part gave me any trouble. I only need 8 out of 10 to win, so it is fastest for me to succeed the first 8 times and then butcher the other 2.
The Approach Practice is severely easy, even with the Expert level. I use putts to save time when I already have 8 successes.
The Putting Practice is also easy until the Expert level. There are some annoyingly sloped putts, so don't screw around too much.
I will very rarely make videos this long again, since the file size had to be very large in order for the picture to still look good. I had to go down to 3 Mb/s, whereas I can go up to 13.5 Mb/s for short stuff. There are also times where the combination of recording for such long periods, my dual core system, the encoding/rendering process from Vegas 10, and the game itself (that sometimes has sound glitches from being 9 years old) can cause weird sound glitches. For whatever reason, they most often occur when a new screen pops up, such as for a new Hole or game mode.
*Between power outages in the Chicagoland area and YouTube problems (inability to convert in processing, even when using WMV and MP4), I was uploading this for two days. That's pretty stupid.
