If you’re talking about icons of eighties cinema, then one of the first names that has to come to anyone’s mind is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And that’s because, perhaps more than anyone else, he defined what that decade was on screen. Seriously, there's a reason many people to this day still consider him to be the king of the action flick, and that’s because of the absolutely iconic performances he gave us in films like Predator, Conan the Barbarian, and The Terminator franchise.
Not that it was all about action with Arnie though because as the nineties rolled around he started to show us all a whole new side to himself, one that was far more willing to make us laugh. And this was a side which would be used to its fullest effect in movies like Kindergarten Cop, Twins, and Jingle All the Way. That said, he’d always find himself returning to his action roots before long. And this was something fans of his always appreciated as it was what he did best.
Even after entering into the political world and becoming Governor of California for a time, Arnold Schwarzenegger would still feel the need to return to the big screen so as to remind us all why he’s the ultimate action hero in franchises like The Expendables. And that’s the spot he remains in today as the elder statesman of the genre, someone so closely associated with the thrills that cinema can provide, he’ll always hold a warm place in our hearts.
