Here are my ESL speaking activities for kindergarten or preschool students. The first one is flashcards. So this is a very simple activity. Just bring in some flashcards that contain the target grammar or vocabulary and then show a flash card to a student and they can make a sentence using that word.
The second activity is Simon says. I'm sure you've all done this before. Students stand up and you could say Simon Says, touch your head. Everyone has to touch their head, but if you say a command without saying Simon Says, and someone does it, they are out of the game.
The third one is Hot Potato. So have a potato or a little stuffed animal, just a safe object with no sharp corners and students pass it around the class and music will be playing. And when the music stops, the person holding the stuffed animal or the potato has to do something. In this case, something related to English.
The fourth activity for kindergarten students is songs and chants. I am the least musical person I know, but not to worry YouTube has everything you need. If you want a song about the weather, whatever the case might be, just have a look on YouTube and you'll find something.
The fifth activity is picture prompt. This is a simple activity. Just find a picture related to the topic of the day, maybe a family is eating a meal together and if your topic is fruits or vegetables, just ask students what do you see? And students could shout out, there's an apples, there's a fruit salad, there are some potatoes, and there's a fork and knife, a glass of water, a glass of milk, some ice cream, etc.
The next activity is using routines. To start my class off, I kind of like to do it the same way every day so I'd ask students, what day of the week is it? It's Wednesday. And, how's the weather today? It's a little bit rainy and a little bit cold. And then I would say and what time is it and students say, it's 10:05, whatever the case might be.
The next speaking activity for young learners is show and tell. This requires some parent coordination, but I get students to bring a little object in from home or a picture like if they have a pet or something like that or a piano, whatever it is. And they can do a little 30 second presentation about their special thing.
The next one is chain spelling. This is really nice if you want to focus on some new vocabulary words. Everyone stands up and maybe I'm teaching about colors that day and so I would say to the first student okay, yellow and they say one letter Y, the next student e, the next l, l, o, w. If someone misses a letter, they have to sit down and are out of the game and then we continue on and then I would say the next word green. G R E E N and we keep going until no students or only one student is left standing.
All right, the next one is telephone. I'm sure you've played this before. I have usually three or four teams and then they would line up in front of each other, like in four lines and I would take the first student from each line. We'd go inside the classroom and I'd give them a sentence that contains the target vocabulary. They go back into the class, they whisper to the next person on their team and they whisper to the next person until the last person, and the last person has to say what they heard.
The 10th one is question and answer. This is a super simple activity. I can ask students questions, they can answer the questions. They can ask me questions. I would answer them, whatever the case might be.
