Top 10 Tinto Brass Movies of All Time
In the world of avant garde cinema, Tinto Brass has been a huge name for decades now as, with his experimental attitude towards filmmaking and his reluctance to ever limit himself for the sake of mainstream success, he’s become one of the fields most respected figures. Hell, he’s the man who made movies like Who Works is Lost, L’urlo, and La Vacanza early on in his career, each of which were filmed in his native Italy.
But that’s not all Tinto Brass is known for. No, as time went on and he felt like he’d done everything he could do in the avant garde filmmaking field, he began to branch out into new genres, with the main one he eventually settled on being the erotic cinema genre. And it’s just as well he did this because this later period of his career would give us even more notable movies, movies like Salon Kitty, The Key, and of course 1979’s Caligula, still to this day one of the most controversial movies ever made.
Why was Caligula so controversial at the time? Well because it featured mainstream big name stars like Malcom McDowell, Helen Mirren, and Peter O’Toole in what was basically a pornographic film. Needless to say then, this ruffled a lot of feathers and gave Tinto Brass even more of a reputation for being an outsider. But then this is a reputation he’s always thrived upon as it’s living along the margins of society that has allowed him to create the great work he’s created.
