Core Web Vitals Shifts Weight to CLS
Google let us know that they are shifting more weight over to Cumulative Layout Shift in their Core Web Vitals score.
They are removing TTI (Time to Interactive) from the Lighthouse tester too.
So, what does that mean for you?
TTI is the time it takes from when you site first starts appearing to a visitor and when they can interact with it, like clicking or scrolling.
TTI was in the Lighthouse tester that has been incorporated into all online speed testers. But it was never in Google Search Console’s version of CWV.
Now Google is removing it from the tester too.
And they are now giving more weight to CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift), meaning they don’t want the web page to jump around while folks are trying to read it.
It’s actually a little hard to test if you run ads on your site.
You can see the CLS on the initial load of your page in the online testers.
But, they stop after everything has been loaded in the viewport, or screen the visitor is using to view the page.
But, Google bots can render the whole page.
And if you run ads in your content, and your ad agency doesn’t use placeholders, then those ads can be different sizes and when they rotate, they can cause the content to jump up and down.
So, those are the 2 things Google is looking at with this CLS score.
And this is just one of the site success tips you’ll find in this week’s Tips Tuesday for Feb 14.
Plus, see the Services section for how to get a site audit that helps you find the real issues with your CWV and actually fixes them, not just cheat the testers because those things don’t fool Google.
