The Okutama area is one of my favorite places in Tokyo.
Only about 2 hours away by train from Shinjuku station, it's an easily accessible escape from the urban chaoticness.
There are a number of mountains and peaks here and this time we went up a longer trail that spans across three peaks: Nokogirisan, Mt. Odake, and Mitakesan. I think it was around 12 to 13km horizontal distance with about a 900m or so elevation gain. With drone searching and rest time included, it took me about 8 to 9 hours to complete the trek.
This trail can be tackled from either end, but I started at on the Nokogirisan side.
To take the route that I did:
From Okutama Station, head left and walk to the Nokogirisan trail head. From here just continue following the signs to Mt. Odake and then to Mitakesan. After arriving at Mitakesan, past the Mitake Shrine area, there is a cable car that can take you down to the base, where there is a bus stop to bring you back to Mitake Station. There is also the option to walk down the mountain to the base.
I think most people do the reverse route as the Nokogirisan side is a bit steeper than the Mitakesan side.
