Little Blue Boxes - Esquire 1971
"Blue boxes" in the early 1970s refer to electronic devices used for phone phreaking - the practice of exploiting telephone systems to make free long-distance calls or otherwise manipulate the phone network. I heard about this article from a PhreakNIC video. PhreakNIC is an annual hacking and technology conference held in Nashville, Tennessee that started in 1997.
