My cover of very popular Irish folk song, 'Irish Rover'.

Haven't been able to dig up much about the songwriter of this one (J. M. Crofts), other than that he was a delph and hardware merchant living in the lower west side of Dublin in the early 1900's.

"IRISH ROVER" - Written by Joseph Mary Crofts

In the year of our Lord, eighteen hundred and six
We set sail from the county of Cork
We hit the high seas with a cargo of bricks
For the grand city hall in New York
‘Twas an elegant craft, she was rigged fore and aft
And how the trade winds drove her
She had twenty three masts and she stood several blasts
And we called her the Irish Rover

There was ol' Mickey Coote who played hard on his flute
While the ladies lined up for his set
He was tootin' with skill for each sparklin' quadrille
But the dancers were flustered and bet'
With his scarce, witty talk he was cock of the walk
As he rolled the dames under and over
We all knew at a glance when he took up his stance
That he sailed on the Irish Rover

There was Barney McGee from the banks of the Lee
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Johnny McGuirk who was scared stiff of work
And a chap from Westmeath called Malone
There was Slugger O’Toole who was drunk as a rule
And fighting Bill Tracy from Dover
And your man Mick McCann from the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover

We had one million bags of the best Sligo rags
We had two million barrels of bone
We had three million bales of Armanian sails
And four million barrels of stone
We had five million hogs, and six million dogs
Seven million barrels of porter
And eight million sides off old blind horses' hides
In the hold of the Irish Rover

We had sailed seven years when the measles broke out
And our ship lost it’s way in the fog
And that whale of a crew was reduced down to two
Just myself and the captain’s old dog
The ship struck a rock, oh Lord what a shock
The bulkhead, it turned right over
Turned nine times around and the poor old dog was drowned
Now I’m the last of the Irish Rover
