۩ Reason for the name:
Surah Al-Kahf is named after the divine miracle contained within it, in that wondrous and extraordinary story of the People of the Cave.
۩ Introduction to the Surah :
1) Meccan, except for verse 38 and verses 86-151, which are Medinan.
2) One of the Me'in (a group of surahs with approximately one hundred verses).
3) Number of verses: 110.
4) Its order: 18.
5) Revealed after Surah Al-Ghashiyah.
6) Begins with praise, starting with "Alhamdulillah" (All praise is due to Allah). The surah recounts the story of Dhul-Qarnayn, Prophet Moses, and the righteous man.
7) Part 16, Hizb 30 & 31, Quarters 1 & 2.
۩ Main Themes of the Surah:
Surah Al-Kahf is a Meccan surah and one of five surahs that begin with "Alhamdulillah" (All praise is due to Allah). These surahs are Al-Fatihah, Al-An'am, Al-Kahf, Saba', and Fatir. All of them begin by glorifying and praising Allah, acknowledging His greatness, majesty, glory, and perfection.
The reason for the revelation of the Surah:
1) On the authority of Ibn Abbas, he said: Utbah ibn Rabi'ah, Shaybah ibn Rabi'ah, Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, An-Nadr ibn Al-Harith, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, Al-As ibn Wa'il, Al-Aswad ibn Al-Muttalib, and Abu Al-Bakhtari, along with a group of Quraysh, gathered. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was greatly distressed by the opposition of his people and their rejection of the advice he brought, which saddened him greatly. So Allah revealed, "Perhaps you will destroy yourself with grief."
2) On the authority of Salman Al-Farisi, he said: The people whose hearts were to be won over, Uyaynah ibn Hisn, Al-Aqra' ibn Habis, and their relatives, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you would sit at the head of the gathering and remove these people and their cloaks"—meaning Salman, Abu Dharr, and the poor Muslims, who were wearing woolen cloaks and nothing else—"we would sit with you, talk to you, and learn from you." Then God revealed, “Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book of your Lord. There is no changing His words, and you will never find a refuge besides Him. And keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His countenance—until He reached—Indeed, We have prepared for the wrongdoers a Fire.” He was threatening them with Hellfire. So the Prophet went searching for them until he found them at the back of the mosque, remembering God. He said, “Praise be to God who did not let me die until He commanded me to keep myself patient with men from my nation. I will be with you in life and with you in death.”
3) Ibn Abbas said regarding the verse, “And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance” (18:26): It was revealed concerning Umayya ibn Khalaf al-Jumahi. He called the Prophet to something he disliked, namely, alienating the poor and drawing the powerful figures of Mecca closer. So Allah revealed, “And do not obey one whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance” (18:26), meaning one whose heart We have sealed against monotheism and who follows his desires, meaning polytheism.
4) Qatadah said: The Jews asked the Prophet about Dhul-Qarnayn, so Allah revealed this verse.
۩ The Virtues of the Surah:
1) Abu al-Darda’ reported that the Prophet said: Whoever memorizes ten verses from the beginning of Surah al-Kahf will be protected from the trial of the Antichrist (Dajjal).
2) On the authority of Abu al-`Aliyah, who said: A man was reciting Surah al-Kahf when an animal in the house began to shy away. He looked and saw a mist or cloud had enveloped him. He mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "Recite, so-and-so, for it is tranquility that has descended because of the Quran."
3) On the authority of `A`ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ...
