She was a patron of the arts, culture, and education, establishing many schools, libraries, and universities throughout her empire. She also undertook many reforms, from the abolition of torture and capital punishment, to the establishment of a new legal code. Catherine wanted to modernize Russia and make it a more just and equitable society.
