But she quickly realized that Peter was a weak and unpopular ruler, and in 1762, she staged a coup d'etat and seized the throne for herself.

As empress, Catherine was determined to make Russia a great and powerful nation, and to bring it into the modern age. She was a patron of the arts, culture, and education, establishing many schools, libraries, and universities throughout her empire. She also undertook many reforms, from the abolition of torture and capital punishment, to the establishment of a new legal code. Catherine wanted to modernize Russia and make it a more just and equitable society.
