A practical talk on creating a small-scale wildlife garden by renowned naturalist, John Walters, author and illustrator of several publications, including The Wildlife of Dartmoor
Gardens humming with life – there is so much simple pleasure to be had from just watching living things right on your doorstep. But our once common garden wildlife, from bumblebees to butterflies, sparrows to hedgehogs, are struggling – 56% of all UK species have declined since 1970. The good news is we can all help to reverse these declines, as every garden represents an incredibly valuable refuge for wildlife and everyone can do something for the wildlife that shares our gardens.
John Walters is a hugely knowledgeable field naturalist, illustrator and author, and consultant on many BBC radio and television programmes, including The Living World, Springwatch and the One Show. He has turned his small urban front garden into a haven for wildlife including frogs, bees and birds. The talk will explain how the garden was created and show the wildlife that has moved in. The talk also describes:
The three essentials that birds need
How to create a space for frogs and dragonflies without digging a pond
Easy methods of providing homes for different types of bees
The best food plants for pollinators
How to create a mini wildflower meadow
