The Guardians of the Galaxy Officially Debut Their Creepy new Code-Name | GOTG issue #6 Explained
#comicexplainer Welcome to the cosmic world of Marvel! The Guardians of the Galaxy, a team we’ve known and loved, have embarked on a shocking new mission with a chilling new identity that’s causing a rift in Marvel’s cosmic community.
In the last issue, the team made the ultimate sacrifice, giving themselves up to Groot to understand his surprising turn to evil. Now, they’ve returned, but with a startling shift in their loyalties.
During an investigation of one of the worlds transformed by Groot’s new ‘Grootfall’ powers, Wiccan and Hulkling stumble upon unexpected plant-life mimicking fauna and the former Guardians of the Galaxy. Having merged with Groot and adopted new plant-based forms, the team reveals they’ve become the Guardians of Grootspace, protectors of the many planets that Groot has colonized for himself. They now stand as apparent adversaries to any cosmic heroes who may wish to intervene.
The birth of the Guardians of Grootspace came after a fateful mission to the mysterious Branch Worlds. Groot was present for the death of Granopy, an ancient Flora Colossus suspected to be the first of his kind. Granopy passed on unimaginable power, transforming Groot into a Galactus-like monstrosity. His seeds spread across the galaxy, landing on innocent worlds and terraforming them, including any unfortunate life forms who happened to be in their path. The Guardians fought against this ‘Grootfall’ as long as they could before finally bonding with Groot to understand why he’s so committed to this path of destruction. Apparently, they liked what they heard.
But fear not! The galaxy won’t be left without its Guardians. The issue’s summary teases the beginning of a NEW Guardians of the Galaxy. With Wiccan and Hulkling having been on the team in their previous, pre-Grootfall incarnation, it makes sense that they’d be the founders of any new group. However, with existing space faring civilizations living in fear of Grootfall, it seems like these two groups will be at odds - the Guardians of the Galaxy fighting for the old universe, and the Guardians of Grootspace fighting for the new.
There’s still much to discover about why the former Guardians of the Galaxy have joined Groot and what they hope to achieve. But having given up their lives and been reborn in strange new forms, Star-Lord’s group are officially debuting a new identity and mission. Let’s hope that the new and old Guardians of the Galaxy can forge some kind of peace, rather than becoming the front line of an impossibly destructive new galactic war.
