"Pruned Oak" by Hermann Hesse is a #poem that highlights the strength of will needed to face life, without ever allowing oneself to be brought down by everything that may happen along the way.

In this #poem, Hermann Hesse compares his own life to that of a "pruned oak." Although humans have injured its branches and trunk, leaving visible scars, the oak is now stronger and more resilient than before.

"Pruned Oak" was written in 1919 and first published in Gedichte des Malers, a collection of illustrated poems from 1920. The poem was included in several other collections afterward.

#Poetry "Pruned Oak" [Hermann Hesse]
(Translated by Hermes Figueiredo)

How they have pruned you, tree,
How strange and peculiar you stand!
How many times you’ve suffered,
Until nothing but defiance and will remained within you!
I am like you, with a pruned,
Tortured life I did not break.
And daily I rise anew
From the endured hardships, lifting my brow into the light.
What was soft and tender within me
The world mocked to death,
Yet my essence is indestructible.
I am content, I am reconciled.
Patiently, I sprout new leaves
From branches shattered a hundred times,
And despite all sorrow, I remain
In love with this crazy world.
