Shaw was born in North Carolina and began playing the violin when she was two years old. Her mother was her first teacher. She began writing music when she was ten, mostly imitating the chamber music of Mozart and Brahms. At the same time, she was primarily interested in learning to play the violin. Shaw earned her Bachelor of Music degree (violin major) from Rice University in 2004, and her Master of Music degree (violin major) from Yale University in 2007.
