Sonic Unleashed...the game that is most known for being "the one where Sonic turns into a werewolf at night". Sonic Unleashed (or Sonic World Adventure as it is known in Japan) was released in 2008 for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2, and mobile devices, with each generation of consoles receiving their own respective ports. Sonic Unleashed was the first mainline Sonic game released after Sonic 06 and the reception of said game had a huge impact on what would become Sonic Unleashed. There was a lot of marketing behind the game and it had high expectations to not be another repeat of Sonic 06. The game uses a brand new engine developed in house at Sega called the Hedgehog Engine. This allowed the game to look breathtakingly beautiful and handle the trademark high-speed that Sonic is known for. Unlike Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed has Sonic as the only playable character but there are two different types of gameplay to him, separated into day and night. During the day you play as Sonic the Hedgehog, as you blast through stages at blitzing high speeds, faster than ever before, while platforming, defeating enemies, and trying to get to the end of the stage as quickly as possible. At night you play as Sonic the Werehog, where Sonic loses his speed but gains claws and unbeatable strength as the focus shifts to more combat heavy stages with light puzzle solving, exploration, and more platforming sections. Despite all this, Sonic Unleashed unfortunately received mixed reviews. It was praised for its beautiful graphics, engaging level design (especially for the day stages), and controls. It was however criticized heavily for the night time stages as many felt the Werehog was a slog to play, the stages were too long making the Werehog overstay its welcome, and felt that the Werehog was just a tack on gimmick to make the game stand out and pad out its run time. The game also had serious frame rate issues when too much was happening on screen. Sonic Unleashed wasn't the comeback that Sega was hoping for, but time has been kind to this game as reception towards it has gotten better over the years. The story of Sonic Unleashed sees Dr. Eggman firing a laser and successfully splitting the world into fragments with the intent of awakening Dark Gaia. Being exposed to Dark Gaia's energy sees Sonic transform into the Werehog but only at night when Dark Gaia is at it's strongest. Along his adventure Sonic meets Chip, a small and vibrant creature who has amnesia. Sonic agrees to help Chip discover who he is while going on a grand adventure across the planet to uncover the secret Gaia Temples that have the power to restore the continents back to their rightful place and learn more about the being Dark Gaia. Hope you like adventure, because we're going on a grand adventure around the world!
