ENGLISH as The PRIMARY LANGUAGE !!!
How could a pair of posters informing high school seniors how to begin the
enrollment process at a local Cal State University trigger a much needed, positive change
within a local public school district?
What led to that careful re-evaluation of an existing, but unsuccessful, educational
strategy was the two different languages those posters were printed in. The large, colorful
posters were basically identical in size, format and content – one written in Spanish, and
the other in English. It could have involved Spanish and Russian, or English and German
language posters. But in this case, the two hanging side by side led to a significant insight,
which in turn eventually resulted in a much improved assimilation factor for students
who entered their public school system with no English proficiency.
