What is Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is one of the most important national holidays in Canada and the United States.
In Canada, it is celebrated on the second Monday in October. In the United States, it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.
People like to have a Thanksgiving Turkey feast. Other popular Thanksgiving foods include mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, corn, sweet potatoes (yams), and green bean casserole.
What is the history of Thanksgiving?
In the winter of 1600, the Pilgrims came to America by the Mayflower ship. The Pilgrims went through a tough winter, and only half of them survived.
The next year, the Pilgrims made a treaty of mutual protection with the Wampanoags, the Native People of North America. Also, one of the Wampanoags taught the Pilgrims how to grow Indian corn.
In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims held a three-day celebration for their successful first harvest. The Wampanoags joined the Pilgrims for feasting and celebrated together!
Later, this tradition became what we now know as Thanksgiving.
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln encouraged Americans to recognize the last Thursday of November as Thanksgiving day. In 1957, Thanksgiving became a national holiday in Canada.
