Mainframe systems continue to run much of the world's computing workload, but it's often difficult to add new features to support growing business needs.
Furthermore the architectural challenges that make them slow to enhance also make them hard to understand and replace.
To reduce the risk involved, we should use an incremental approach to legacy displacement, gradually replacing legacy capabilities with implementations in modern technologies.
This strategy requires us to introduce seams into the mainframe system: points in which we could divert logic flow into newer services.
In a recent project we investigated several approaches to introduce these seams into a long-lived mainframe system and would like to share our ideas with the audience, and how they relate to other legacy modernisation approaches.
Join us as we talk about Incremental legacy modernisation and introduce you to a CodeConcise, a Proof of Concept developed in-house by EMPC and Data and AI service lines, which employs GenAI to discover how it can help us understand large legacy codebases. With this PoC we hope to help both reverse engineers and business analysts wrap their heads around large Mainframe codebases, supporting our approach and making modernization efforts smoother and more efficient.
