Did you know that there’s more than one Russian word for “Now”? If not, watch this lesson and find out what they are. Both of them translate into English as “now”, but clearly there has to be some difference between them. I will give you vivid examples so that you start using them correctly when you speak Russian, and you will understand native speakers better.
Hello my friends learners! You are watching the ARusPro channel, and I’m Anastasia. In today’s lesson I will teach you how to use correctly these two Russian words that are very similar in their meaning: СЕЙЧАС AND ТЕПЕРЬ. Both of them translate into English as “now”, but clearly there has to be some difference between them. Wanna know what it is? Let’s achieve it!

СЕЙЧАС Vs ТЕПЕРЬ
So, just like ЗДЕСЬ represents “pure location”, СЕЙЧАС represents “pure time”, the current moment as it is, without any emphatic meaning. “Теперь” has an additional meaning, additional connotation, and we are going to look at it in a moment:
1) – Милая, сколько сейчас времени?
Два часа.
2) Я хочу тебя поцеловать, прямо сейчас!
3) – Привет, сможешь приехать ко мне домой и помочь починить компьютер?
Когда?
Сейчас.
Сейчас не получится, я на даче. Давай в шесть часов?
As you can see, in all these examples the adverb СЕЙЧАС solely means “now”, it doesn’t have any sub-meanings, and now let’s look at the word “теперь”:
So, this phrase I said a few seconds ago :”and now!”: in Russian will sound as “а теперь” because the adverb “ТЕПЕРЬ” shows a change or a transition that has occurred or is occurring, and usually the state of things changes drastically, so there’s a contrast between the state of things in the Past and in the Present.
1) Раньше Пётр курил, а теперь не курит.
2) Раньше Джеймс плохо говорил по-русски, а теперь хорошо говорит
3) Раньше здесь был лес, а теперь здесь город.
4) Раньше я был разочарован во всех женщинах, а теперь мы с тобой вместе и я теперь знаю, что такое настоящая любовь.
Often times the conjunction “a” is bundled to the adverb “Теперь”, which strengthens the contrast.
