A diverging lens is sort of like the opposite of a converging lens because it curves inwards instead of outwards. It is represented with this symbol, interesting I know.
Diverging lenses refract the light in a way, which makes them spread out. This creates a virtual image not a real one because the image cannot be projected onto a screen. It can only be seen by the eye.
Diverging lenses always produce virtual images that are upright and diminished. Just as with converging lenses, a ray diagram can be drawn to show how it works. Firstly, a ray is drawn from the tip of the object to the lens, it then refracts away from the principle axis along the path from the principle focus. Secondly, a ray is drawn passing straight through the centre of the lens without being refracted. The point where the two rays meet is where the virtual image would appear to be. These lenses are used to fix shortsightedness, but that’s for another video.
