Trismus, also sometimes called lockjaw, is a painful condition in which the chewing muscles of the jaw become contracted and sometimes inflamed, preventing the mouth from fully opening. Commonest reason for trismus in India is rampant use of Areca-nut (Supari) with or without tobacco. The Arecholic acid from areca-nut causes submucosal fibrosis – thereby reducing the elasticity of the buccal mucosa. The mouth opening capacity of the person gradually decreases over a period of time.
