"Haircut in the latest fashion,
Dressed like a London dandy"
This, as we remember, is Eugene Onegin, who "finally saw the light of day." But is this dandy just a haircut and a suit? The dandy code of conduct, as Olga Weinstein, a historian of this issue, writes, is "pride masked by polite cynicism, a polished coldness of address, and sarcastic remarks about vulgar manners or tasteless outfits. And the quintessence of dandyism consists of three rules: "Don't be surprised at anything"; "Maintaining impassivity, surprise with the unexpected"; "Withdraw as soon as the impression is made." Many Russian noblemen in the late 18th and early 19th centuries were afflicted with cultural Anglomania and strove to emulate English gentlemen. However, in the traditional view, a Russian gentleman is the complete opposite of a dandy. Let's turn again to Pushkin for help. Let's recall his unusually caustic, even over-the-top, epigram about the Anglophile Count Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov:

"Half-lord, half-merchant,
Half-sage, half-ignoramus,
Half-scoundrel…"

So is there hope that it will finally be complete? This is the question we address to our experts—historians Alexander Orlov and Vsevolod Voronin.
