Retaliate is a track I wrote as a warning shot.
For some back story. I was born with a speech disability. Largely speculated as being caused by the fact that I was born with drugs in my system. My speech disability was so bad that I not only received disability checks in the mail but I was also in speech class from Kindergarten till the last days of 8th grade year. It was so bad that not even my teachers could understand me speaking. I would get made fun of for my disability by my peers and teachers.
Despite this setback I still went on and became one of the most popular and admired music artist in my area. In fact this would be the cause of several falling outs between me and other artists I’ve worked with in the past. Having being told on more than one occasion that they didn’t want to work with me anymore because I get more attention than other artists in the group.
When I got to high school my popularity only increased. As I released more music and would frequently be seen performing verses in the school. And debating Hiphop topics.
It got to the point where if someone asked who was the top 3 artist in the school my name was always mentioned.. But it wasn’t easy for me, speaking still isn’t easy for me. Every moment I’m speaking let alone rapping or singing. I still have to make a conscious effort to speak correctly. Or I end up sounding like “mush mouth,” something I used to be called in elementary.
Retaliate was written when I heard from credible sources that certain “peers” in my high school wasn’t respecting my position. It was me essentially drawing my line in the sand. Saying “Aye you can try it if you want but it’s not going to end well for you, I’ve gotten this far for a reason.”
The song features my nephew who was also very well known and a respected Hiphop artist in the area. DB3 and I were often compared to Jay Z and Kanye West for our styles and approach to music. Often dropping freestyle verses and drawing a crowd just from having fun.
Retaliate would eventually ended up put back into the vault for over a decade. After I went into a depression after losing over 12 unreleased songs that failed to backup after my phone got damaged due to water damage, from helping my grandmother move. The beats didn’t backup and the songs didn’t back up and I had no way to trace the beats back to their origin. As back then I didn’t think to write down the name or creator of the beats.
Eventually Retaliate would make its way out of the vault. After years of the song collecting dust.
