This year has been one of crisis - the world is in crisis, and many of us have had to deal with personal crises, trauma and anxiety.
I have found myself composing a suite of songs, songs that are like medicine for the crisis. I never really planned to do it, but they have formed naturally as I have turned to my shinobue as therapy.
As of now there are three songs in progress. Sort of miniatures, a sort of triptych that form a little suite.
1. PRAYER - This song was written the night of the Salt Lake City earthquake as a sort of lullaby to calm the Earth back down.
2. RELEASE - This is a song that was written in collaboration with a dear friend as we have been dealing together with the loss of a loved one. It explores the breath-like cycles of emotional release. This piece is a companion sound work for a sculpture she made. (Thanks, Leah Waldo)
3. STEADFAST - This is a piece that is a response to the intense waves anxiety of trying to secure the right employment during COVID-19, the trauma of separation as a family, immigration worries, and feelings of being lied to in new professional relationships.
