Graphene and related materials can really advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 goals. All of those 17 items can be advanced by using these materials. For example, these materials can be used to advance biosensors for monitoring health and diagnosing diseases. This is a lower cost platform, more affordable to a broader range of people compared to existing diagnostic tools that are available. The materials can be recycled. The quantity of materials used is usually very small compared to what is being used for existing technologies. So I think this material can satisfy many if not all the sustainable development goals in at least one form or another.
We all know graphene is a wonder material with infinite opportunity of applications. You can have higher data rates, larger bandwidth and lower power consumption which is something we all need in this time. We are going to have less power consumption if we will be able to integrate graphene in these devices. And also a smaller footprint. Reduced costs are something that one could achieve with graphene. We’ve been able to produce ground-breaking results. Really promising ones. We need to find a way to use graphene and 2D materials in an impactful way for making our world more sustainable. Developing technologies which are less power hungry is going to help in this way. I’m proud of what my research group has achieved in the last ten years concerning the synthesis of graphene.
We have carbon material everywhere. For sustainability, if you burn everything you will find carbon. I will say carbon is a material that could respect this kind of sustainability because you find this material easily.
