"Three Words About Kolomyika" is an orchestral rendition of three parts of another piece by Dmytro Malyi, "Seven Words About Kolomyika" for solo violin (2022). The author is convinced that the kolomyika genre is the genetic code of the Ukrainian people, its voice: willful, steadfast, and courageous, yet friendly and humorous. "Seven Words" is a prototype of the seven last words of Jesus Christ on the cross, which reflects the understanding of the suffering of the Ukrainian people with faith in the victory of light.
The piece utilizes the genre model of kolomyika in its various transformations. The musical text is based on the Hutsul scale, changing meters, various playing techniques, and the kolomyika rhythm-formula, which unites all parts. Dmytro Malyi confesses, "Orchestrating a piece for solo violin is like writing the work anew. In the new version, I used plenty of techniques of colorful orchestration." Overall, the cycle sounds wonderfully atmospheric and vitalistic, conjuring in the mind beautiful landscapes of the picturesque Ukrainian Carpathians.
