Tips & Tricks Thursday#32 Configuring Old Router as Wireless Adapter

Are you getting weak Wi-Fi signal because you're too far from the main router's location?
So, why don't you recycle your old router and configure it as a wireless repeater to have better Wi-Fi connection coverage and speed?
Below are the steps on how to configure old router as wireless adapter:
1. Login to your router with administrative username and password.
2. Go to tools -- firmware -- firmware upgrade
3. Go to www.dd-wrt.com and download the custom firmware based on your router model.
4. Upload your firmware and let it reboot for few minutes.
5. After setting up your router username and password, go to the setup tab.
6. Disable the wan connection type
7. Rename your router for better identification(eg. routername-repeater)
8. Change the local IP address to an IP which is not used and make sure its in the same subnet. E.g.: Primary router:192.168.1.1 Repeater :192.168.1.x
9. Disable the DHCP server.
10. Disable the firewall.
11. Change the setting "gateway" to "router" under the advanced networking tab.
12. Select repeater as the wireless mode and make sure the settings like wireless network setting and wifi SSID are the same as your primary router. The radio button bridged should be checked too.
13. Add a virtual interface and configure the same setting as the physical interface.
14. Set up the Encryption Type, Encryption algorithm, password as same as your primary router for both the physical and virtual interface.
15. Disable the firewall under the security tab.
16. Click save and reboot the router.
