Happy Mother's Day! Our little bluebird Mabel has laid an egg! Here's a little montage that shows our cute little bluebirds going from an empty nest box to first egg on Maker Farm. Our Eastern Bluebird couple, Mabel and Bert, took nine days from nest box discovery to laying the first egg in April 2025.
We made our own DIY birdhouse following the Cornell Labs recommendations, and added a wifi Ring camera to record the interior of the nesting box. Watch the story of the how we built the birdhouse here: • My Slow Spring on the Farm... and the Gift...
Note that this nesting box was intended for a variety of birds who are on our farm, and we did not expect bluebirds to arrive! We would have built a bluebird-nesting box a bit differently than this.
