The Return of the Finnish Guard ("Long have we suffered cold and hunger...") is a Finnish folk song about the Finnish Guard's participation in the 1877-1878 Turkish War. The second verse of the song refers to the battle of Gornyi Dubniak, in which Finns participated. The song is also known by several other names, such as Kauan on kärsitty, Oi kallis kotimaa and Suomen kaartin paluumarssi.
Neither the composer nor the lyricist of the song is known. According to the Great Book of Songs of Hope, it would be the same song as 'The Remembrance March of the Finnish Guard Home from the Turkish Warfield', composed and published by G.W. Gustafsson in 1878, which was intended to be sung to the tune of the folk song 'Laulava leiwo, wirkoisa wieno'. Gustafsson composed the song after watching the Finnish Guard march past Helsinki in May 1878. Apparently, however, the 'Return Song of the Finnish Guard' and the 'Departure Song of the Finnish Guard' ('Tuhannenpa verran poikia läksi...'), which has also survived to the present day, are not archaic hymns but ordinary songs. The Turkish war inspired a total of 113 archaic hymns in Finland, none of which are known today.
During the Finnish Civil War, both Whites and Reds composed their own songs to the tune of "The Return of the Finnish Guard". The Whites used the tune in the "Conquest Song of the Freedom Warrior" ("Long has the Russians' power been suffered") and the Reds in the song "Days of Terror in Hennala". The composer Uuno Klami used the melody in the finale of his 2nd Symphony (1945).

Suomen kaartin paluulaulu (”Kauan on kärsitty vilua ja nälkää…”) on suomalainen kansanlaulu, joka kertoo Suomen kaartin osallistumisesta vuosien 1877–1878 Turkin sotaan. Laulun toisessa säkeistössä viitataan Gornyi Dubnjakin taisteluun, johon osallistui suomalaisia. Laulu tunnetaan myös useilla muilla nimillä, kuten Kauan on kärsitty, Oi kallis kotimaa ja Suomen kaartin paluumarssi.
Laulun säveltäjää tai sanoittajaa ei tunneta. Suuren toivelaulukirjan mukaan kyseessä olisi sama laulu kuin arkkiveisujen tekijä G. W. Gustafssonin vuonna 1878 sepittämä ja julkaisema ”Muisto marssi Suomen Kaartin kotia tulosta Turkin Sotatantereelta”, joka oli tarkoitettu laulettavaksi kansanlaulun ”Laulava leiwo, wirkoisa wieno” sävelellä. Gustafsson sepitti laulunsa seurattuaan kotimaahan palanneen Suomen kaartin ohimarssia Helsingissä toukokuussa 1878.
