Astronomers recently noticed an object that is about 2 to 4 times the mass of the sun and some 2000 to 6000 light years away. It's been named OB110462. They state that this object could be a ghostly miniature-sized black hole, or even a neutron star. This mysterious object is the first “stellar 'ghost'” discovered floating through space without an accompanying star.
Though black holes are typically invisible, researchers can use gravitational microlensing to see how they warp and distort light from distant stars with their powerful gravitational field. Black holes are one of the most exotic phenomena in astrophysics. It's been estimated that there are about a hundred million stellar black holes in our galaxy. They will gather information from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to study more about this mysterious object.
