Hallie Rubenhold's 'The Five' has been a worldwide best seller and has earned the author a cupboard-full of awards.
The book is the first full length treatment of the five so-called canonical victims of the serial killer known to history as Jack the Ripper. However, there have been previous books focussing on individual victims and a short book on all five called 'The Victims of Jack the Ripper' by Neil Sheldon. Furthermore virtually every book ever published on this subject has discussed the victims and their lives sometimes at great length.
Hallie Rubenhold's 'The Five' attracted attention perhaps for two main reasons.
Firstly she engaged in a very public spat with the 'Ripperological' community - fought mainly over 'Twitter' - with accusations of sexism and misogyny and counter claims of inaccurate historical story telling.
Secondly, Hallie controversially claimed that the victims did not meet their ends while acting as prostitutes but were mostly killed while sleeping rough. Indeed she claims tat there is no evidence that most of the victims were prostitutes at all.
In this episode of the House of Lechmere Edward Stow will dispassionately examine the claims made in 'The Five' to see whether they stack up.
