At the beginning, Auschwitz I consisted of 20 buildings (14 single-story and 6 two-story) and two SS administrative blocks. Expansion began in 1941: floors were added to the single-story buildings, and eight additional two-story blocks were erected on part of the roll call square. After the development, a camp complex consisting of 28 brick blocks was created. Most of them were used for prisoners, while the rest served as a camp hospital, warehouses, offices, and a detention center.
