Open Burn Season 2024
Open Burn Season runs from January 15 - May 1. During this time, Barnstable Land Trust will carry out nearly a dozen pile burns with the help of AmeriCorps Cape Cod service members in addition to BLT's dedicated Burn Team. These prescribed fires are intentionally set under specific conditions to meet specific objectives, such as creating/restoring early successional habitat or to reduce the amount of burnable material in fire-prone areas.
Why do we do them? Pile burning not only allows BLT to consume invasive plant material, but also increases public safety by reducing fuel and creating defensible space. The process of pile burning is a close mimic to natural process (vs chipping), can provide a clean slate in problem areas, and create a temporary ‘rabbitat’ for wildlife.
