Penguin Awareness Day 🐧
This is ‘Mercy’ the Little Penguin. He is shaking off after a dip in our on-site seabirds pool. We use this area to exercise aquatic creatures and make sure that these little wonders are able to swim normally before being released.
Mercy was brought into Bonorong Wildlife Hospital from Bruny Island in a lethargic and dehydrated condition. Thankfully, with a bit of care, rehydration, and love from our vets and keeper team, he made a full recovery and returned shortly back to the wild! 😊💕
Little penguins are the smallest species of penguin on earth, only weighing about 1.5kg and growing to about 30-35cm in height (about the size of a bowling pin 🎳 ). They live in burrows near the ocean, which they leave during the day to go fishing. Little Penguin colonies are found all along the southern coast of Australia- fortunately for us here in Tasmania!
