Do you know why the PlayStation controller buttons have the triangle, circle, cross, and square symbols?
In an interview with Famitsu magazine, Playstation 1 designer Teiyu Goto revealed the meaning behind these symbols. The triangle represents the viewpoint; I made it represent someone's head or direction, and made it green.
The square represents a piece of paper; I made it for bringing up menus or documents, and made it pink.
The circle and cross represent yes or no decisions, and I made them red and blue, respectively.
Goto also noted that he had to "fight" with the company's management to get the design approved, as they insisted on the symbols being like the Super Nintendo controllers, where the buttons were labeled A, B, X, and Y. But the designer stood his ground, and now they are some of the most recognizable symbols associated with gaming.
