The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Darjeeling Toy Train,The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was built between 1879 and 1881 and has been in operation since 1881. It was designed by British engineer and was considered an engineering marvel at the time, as it had to climb steep hills to reach Darjeeling, which is situated at an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is famous for its unique zig-zag system. In this system, instead of going straight up a hill, the train reverses, changes tracks, and then moves forward. This reduces the stress on the engine and helps the train to climb the hill. The zig-zag system is a unique feature of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
In 1999, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway received the distinction of being a UNESCO world heritage site. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a popular tourist attraction and is considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world.
