The Emperor Scorpion (Pandinus imperator) is one of the largest and most recognizable scorpion species on Earth. Native to the humid forests and savannas of West Africa, these impressive arachnids spend most of their lives hidden beneath logs, rocks, and deep burrows in moist soil.
Growing up to 6–8 inches long, the Emperor Scorpion is known for its glossy black body and powerful pincers, which it often uses to capture and crush prey before injecting venom. Unlike many desert scorpions, its venom is relatively mild and primarily used to subdue insects and other small arthropods.
In the wild, Emperor Scorpions are nocturnal hunters, emerging at night to search for insects, roaches, beetles, and other invertebrates. During the day, they remain hidden in burrows or under leaf litter to maintain humidity and avoid predators.
One of their most fascinating traits is their parental care. Female Emperor Scorpions give live birth and carry their young—called scorplings—on their back until the babies molt for the first time.
These remarkable arachnids are an important part of the rainforest ecosystem and remain one of the most popular scorpion species kept in captivity due to their size, appearance, and relatively calm temperament.
