Hello everyone and welcome back to Everybody Loves English with me, your English teacher, Mr. Nick! Today's video is about another very popular North American holiday. And, it's a very special one. Today we talk about Mother’s Day!

Many people have said that the most beautiful word in any language, is the word "Mother"

Mother's Day is a special day when people take time to honour their moms and make them feel special. North America isn't the only place that celebrates mothers. Many countries around the world have special days like this one, but at different times of the year.

For example, In Lebanon, Mother's Day is on the first day of spring. Whereas in Russia, they celebrate Mother's Day on Int'l Women's Day, which is in early March. Here, in North America, Mother’s Day is usually celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

In ancient times, the Greeks used to celebrate Mother's Day too. There was a goddess in ancient Greece named Rhea and she symbolized motherhood. Rhea was celebrated by offering flowers, sweets, and wine. Years later, Christians liked the idea and decided to borrow this tradition
from the Greeks. They started celebrating the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus.

In England, a different name for Mother's Day was used in the 1600s. It was called "Mothering Sunday". It was a day when people could enjoy a day off from work and spend quality time with their mothers.

So, where did this holiday come from and who was the first person to suggest
that we celebrate Mother's Day? Well, actually, there were two different women from the United States that proposed the idea of a Mother's Day holiday.

First, in 1872, there was a woman from Boston named Julia Ward Howe that first tried to create a Mother’s Day holiday, but she was unsuccessful. Later on, in 1902, a woman named Anna Jarvis started a celebration in her own little town in West Virginia. She wanted to celebrate mothers with a holiday. She wanted to celebrate this holiday on the same day that her own mother passed away. She wrote many letters to anyone that could help her including politicians. Finally, at one point, the president of the United States himself agreed to help her and they created a Mother’s Day in 1914.

The Mother’s Day we celebrate today is pretty similar to the ancient one. People still buy their mothers nice gifts including chocolates, cards, flowers jewelry and other presents. Most children make cards for their mothers in school and pick some flowers for them from outside. Mother's Day presents don't need to be very expensive, after all, It's the thought that counts!

Another way to help make moms feel special on this day is to go to restaurants.
Brunch (which comes from Breakfast + Lunch) is usually very popular on Mother's Day.

How you choose to celebrate this beautiful holiday, is up to you. After all, Mother’s Day is just a great opportunity to call, visit or spend time with our mothers. It's a day to make them all feel as special as they deserve to feel. So, whether your mothers live close to you, far away in another country, or maybe somewhere else, it's a great day to stop what you're doing, think about them.
Remind them how much you love them and how much they mean to you.

Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful moms out there celebrating, including my
mom and my wife! We love you very much. In fact, we love all the wonderful mothers,
and you know what else we love?
