Hello everyone and welcome back to
Everybody Loves English with ME, your English teacher,
Mr. Nick!

Today is July 1st, also known as Canada Day,
if you live here in Canada.
Another interesting fact about July 1st in Canada,
is that it’s also MOVING DAY!
That’s right. Since most people have a day off on
this holiday, it has also become
the perfect day to move to our new homes
or apartments!

But today we’re going to be focussing
on Canada day, the holiday!

On July 1st, 1867, Canada officially became a country.
Back then, we only had four provinces.
A province is like Canada’s version of a state. Of course,
there are some differences between
provinces and states but that’s basically what a province is.
And In 1867, Canada just had 4 of them.
Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.
That’s it!

Like most people, Canadians love big celebrations.
Especially on Canada’s birthday.
Some Canadians like having a barbecue in their
backyard with friends and family.

Who doesn’t enjoy a good BBQ??
Some hamburgers and hotdogs,
maybe some potato salad and corn on the cob!
Combine all that with a nice cold Molson beer
and we have ourselves
a perfect Canada Day celebration!

If a BBQ seems like too much work, and you’d
rather just relax and enjoy the day, many local
parks have festivities that you can also enjoy.
You can spend the day at a nearby park
or lake having a picnic with your friends and family!

Another thing you’ll see on Canada Day,
is the Canadian flag everywhere.
You’ll see them hanging from buildings
or homes and some people also carry
small flags in their hands and wave them around.

Many cities across the country also have free
outdoor concerts or parades.
This is another way Canadians from all
over the world can celebrate Canada Day
together as one.

And because our flag is RED AND WHITE,
there are usually many red and white
decorations all over the place.

Finally, my favourite part.
At night, many Canadians like gather
and watch fireworks in places
like the Ottawa Parliament buildings
or the Old Port in Montreal.

What a perfect ending to a fun and
relaxing holiday!

Now. Here’s a little homework!

Question #1:
Do you live in Canada?
If so, where do you live and
how do YOU celebrate Canada Day?

Question #2:
How many provinces and territories
does Canada have today?

Question #3:
What is Canada’s population?

And Finally!! Question #4:
What’s the name of Canada’s National Anthem?
Do you know all the words?

I look forward to reading and responding
to ALL your answers below!

I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s little lesson
