Can humans love AI robots? | DW Documentary
Artificial intelligence creates art, knows more than many people, and works faster than they do. But will people accept AI-controlled robots that serve as service workers or entertain those in need of care?
What must a robot have for people to be willing to accept it as a social companion? Does it need a face, or is it essential that the machine can understand or even display emotions?
Psychologist, neuroscientist, and philosopher Agnieszka Wykowska, a researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, says: “We tend to humanize everything. We even see faces on the front of cars. This intensifies when a robot exhibits human-like behavior.”
In a nursing home in Rendsburg, the film depicts the relationship between people in need of care and robots. Hannes Eilers, from the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, analyzes the use of robots there at the request of health insurance companies. The robots sing with the elderly, play games with them, or demonstrate physical exercises; The only thing they're not allowed to do is pray with them. The systems operate autonomously. This means they can't access an AI server in the background, so they're harmless in terms of data protection.
However, background AI servers already control much of our communication. They don't just suggest what we should read, eat, or buy next: there are also chatbots that serve as personal contacts. Scientist Hossein Rahnama of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston is perfecting the appearance and communication of these kinds of chatbots. He believes that "we now have access to such computing power and data that we can create a digital version of anyone and soon even make them sentient."
