"Home" a Poem by Hannah Drake and Kentucky Students
Kentucky to the World is very proud that Hannah received the award for her poem HOME that was created for our live program at the Bomhard Theatre on Oct 23
The poem was created as part of Louisville based non-profit Kentucky to the World’s October 2022 program “The State of Song: My Old Kentucky Home Faces a Changing World” at The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts where Drake sat on a panel with musicians Harry Pickens and Ben Sollee, led in conversation by Emily Bingham, the author of My Old Kentucky Home: The Astonishing Life and Reckoning of an Iconic American Song.
Together, the group dove into the past, present and future implications of the racist origins of Kentucky’s state song and concluded their discussion with the debut presentation of this poem.
Prior to the speaking program, over 250 words were sourced from area schools and student groups like the Louisville Leopards and AMPed along with our in-house audience in response to several prompts about Kentucky to gather as many perspectives as possible.
