A global bleaching event currently impacts over 54% of the world's coral reefs across more than 50 countries. This is attributed to rising sea temperatures, with the percentage of affected areas increasing by about 1% each week. Scientists reached this conclusion by analyzing satellite-derived sea surface temperature data and in-water measurements. The current phase of El Niño, combined with global warming, is identified as the primary cause of this extensive bleaching.
