About Build:
The purpose of investing is to preserve capital over time, with the hope and expectation of growth in purchasing power while facing an uncertain future.
As investors save for the future, a key challenge is that our financial markets, and the behavior of their participants, are in a constant state of change, disruption, and learning. Sometimes this process can be painful. Our living memory is still fresh with the lessons learned from hallmark events like the Crash of 1929, the Stagflation of the 1970s, Black Monday of 1987, the Dot-com Bubble of the late 1990s, and the Housing Bubble of the mid-2000s. We believe this arc of progression is never finished, and continues to this day.
Adaptation and evolution are required for sustained investment success over a long-term time horizon. Throughout their history, our financial markets have required investors to plan, navigate, and adapt to disruption and change. Often, the process of updating and adapting is a response to key events that force the investment industry to update its common knowledge and best practices. Over history, many of these painful lessons have helped the financial services industry update its best practices, recommendations, and product solutions for the ultimate benefit of clients. Diversification, security analysis, and passive investing are just a few of the updates to portfolio construction over the last century that have ultimately provided significant benefit to the investment client.
This process of change and adaptation in the investment landscape is, more than ever, alive and well today. From our perspective, the pace of change in today’s Internet-driven society is faster than ever – and continues to accelerate as technology reduces frictions in the transfer of information, goods and services, and our social interactions. Over recent decades, we have witnessed technology and its disruption change our day-to-day lives in nearly every facet. At Build, we believe the way we save and invest in our capital markets is no exception.
We seek to be ahead of these changes on behalf of our clients. In the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, we have observed significant shifts from government policy makers, regulators, and central banks in response to developments and events in financial markets – as well as the disruptive technology wave itself. We believe that adaptative investment solutions, with an embedded sound risk management approach, are key to successfully navigating this uncertain future. For us, this means rethinking existing practices for portfolio construction. It means innovating in quantitative tools and our decision framework which forms our novel approach.
We believe in seeking better outcomes on behalf of our clients as we face change. In a rapidly changing environment, we believe in evolution in action. And in a time when current standards, best practices, and approaches come under challenge, we believe in thinking ahead to help investors thrive – not just survive.
