I made this music video as a thank you to my family and all my friends for giving me the courage to keep on going making music over the last years.
Amsterdam is a song about reflection and fond memories of simpler times.
The opening line of the song sort of sums up the mood in a nutshell - “We’re having breakfast in Amsterdam”... Quite literally; - Smoking joints in the morning. This is something that I thought was helping me/healing me at the time but I was wrong.
When I wrote this song, I had one friend working as a kitesurfing instructor in Sri Lanka and another was studying in Singapore for a while... I was in living in my friend Nick’s house in Hamburg, sleeping on a blow up mattress and feeling totally lost. The one thing that kept me going at the time was the thought of meeting all my pals again and I came to realise that no matter how low you feel, or how bad things seem, the most important thing in life is surrounding yourself with the people you love. Never forget it.

On the Recording Process:
Myself and Rich Turvey produced & recorded most of this E.P. together, just the two of us in his studio in Parr Street Studios, Liverpool. As a departure from the live band recordings I had previously done, I wanted to do something new and record these tunes layer by layer. We initially played all the instruments on the songs with plans to go back to do the drums and more guitars - and then the pandemic hit so this wasn’t possible. So I asked my good friend Rob Kennedy if he would record the drums in his studio in Dublin and my friend Sebastian to lay down guitars in his studio in Hamburg. This added a new element and layer to the sound.
I also wanted to experiment a little more with vocal harmonies, of which in some songs I did up to 12 or 14 layers of vocal harmonies. And I wanted to introduce some electronic elements such as the Moog and drum machines in certain songs (Amsterdam.)
This was a different process of recording for me, but a very enjoyable experience and I learned how much of an absolute beast Rich is. This guy can literally play every instrument. He’s a sicko. Plus he’s a legend and super nice lad and we got on very well which made the whole process really fun and organic.
