Smartface is the experimental lo-fi hip hop project by Stockholm-based producer and musician Johan Lind. With its melodic emphasis, Smartface veers from the more traditional sound of boom bap hip hop by incorporating elements of pop harmonies and vocalists. When Johan discovered hip hop at the age of seven he decided it was time to revolt against his metalhead parents. Listening to acts like A Tribe Called Quest and Gang Starr paved the way for his taste in hip hop - raw and filled with samples, and is still a major source of inspiration. With no traditional musical education or training, Johan describes his learning process as “playing around until it worked out”. Given his background as a drummer, he usually starts with a beat when producing a new song, creating a rhythmic environment on which to build the rest of the music. His curiosity and enthusiasm as a producer results in a unique mix of different styles from decades of hip hop and only time can tell what this exciting producer will do next.
