Here is a detailed breakdown:
CVT Failure
This became a recurring problem starting in the fourth generation as manufacturers replaced the traditional automatic transmission with the CVT. Most owners reported this problem at the 100,000-mile range. Some of the symptoms of CVT failure include a PF171 or P1F70 error code, an illuminated check engine light, a car that fails to move in reverse or drive, a car struggling to drive up a hill, hesitance or slipping to accelerate, whining noise, and jerking or shuddering. An old CVT fluid was the reason behind the rampant CVT failure in the Nissan Altima. This can be resolved by replacing the CVT fluid.

The manual recommends doing it at the 60,000-mile range, but some sources recommend replacing the fluid after every 30,000-mile range. It is equally important to use the recommended CVT fluid. If the issue is not resolved, have a professional technician diagnose the problem and fix it. Nissan responded to the problem by extending the warranty of some of the affected models.

Acceleration Problems
There have been reports of Nissan Altima becoming unresponsive and not accelerating or nothing happens once the driver steps on the gas. In addition, there have been reports of the RPMs not increasing, making it impossible to maneuver the car at the recommended speed. This is a problem that results from CVT transmission failure. The lifespan of a CVT system varies based on the car model; check the owner’s manual to know the duration that applies to your car. However, your maintenance practices may shorten the lifespan. If you are experiencing the listed acceleration-based problems, let an expert assess the underlying cause and correct it.

Purchasing a newer Nissan Altima (2017 to present) will reduce the likelihood of these issues as they are only common in the older models.
